A note about these numbers. I ran these numbers the day before Doug DeMuro released his most recent Review of the BMW E39 M5. I highly recommend you watch that video because it does a great job of giving you the justification about why these cars are so expensive.
I will run these numbers again in the future to see if his video increases the prices of the vehicles.
What’s the current price of a BMW E39?
The average asking price of a BMW E39 is $4,084 with a median of $3,500, not including M5. For the enthusiast, outside of the M5, you will be looking at the “manual” and “touring” cars which command quite a premium. The unicorn of the bunch is the “540i wagon-manual” which was not made but there are a few copies out there that have been converted into these unicorn cars.
- The average asking price of a BMW E39 Wagon is $5,156.
- The average asking price of a BMW E39 Sedan is $4,053.
These premiums are based on the average cost of an E39 nationwide (without the M5) + the option.
- For an E39 Touring/Wagon you can expect to pay about $1,100 more than the average E39.
- For a manual transmission E39, you’ll pay about $2,000 extra.
- For an E39 with the “Sport Package” you are looking at about $2400, but a number of these cars are “manual transmission” so you need not pay the extra premium for that.
- For an E39 M5, you are looking at an extra $19,000!
How much is a BMW E39 Touring/Wagon?
The Touring version of the E39 is beloved by many and has a strong cult following. You will find many copies of this car with the luxury trim owned by affluent people with kids. You can expect to find “Cheerios” for years to come but these affluent tend to take care of their vehicles and with some slight modifications you can have a sporty-looking wagon in no time.

How much is a BMW E39 with a Sport Package?
The sport package evolved over the years. The pinnacle being the 2003 with a 6-speed manual transmission, which was dubbed the baby-M5. That being said the sport package tended to add visual and suspension upgrades that improved the performance of all the vehicles. We did a broad analysis of all the vehicles with the sports package and found that it adds a nice premium to the vehicle.
